Andrea Cernin is a contemporary abstract artist and designer based in Marion, IA.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Creativity has been a constant thread throughout Andrea’s life. From an early age, she was drawn to art—encouraged by teachers who recognized her talent and imagination. In middle school, a teacher predicted she would become a graphic designer after seeing Andrea’s elaborate PowerPoint presentations. From that point on, her path felt clear.

Andrea earned her BFA in Graphic Design from Iowa State University in 2013. She spent a decade working as a corporate graphic designer while simultaneously running a wedding invitation business. In 2020, she discovered a love for surface pattern design, which opened the door to a new daily practice of drawing every night. Not long after, she felt a calling to paint—an intuitive way to express her emotions and create without boundaries.

Her work is rooted in play, experimentation, and a deep appreciation for color, movement, and composition. Through daily practice, Andrea has developed a style that is both expressive and intentional, bridging the worlds of fine art and design.

Today, she balances abstract painting, pattern design, and freelance graphic design—alongside her most meaningful role as a mother. She lives in Marion, Iowa with her husband, Keaton, their two young daughters, Willow and Sutton, and a lively crew of pets.

You can often find her working from a local coffee shop, drawing on her iPad, or painting in her sunny home studio.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores themes of mental health, societal pressure, and motherhood through bold color, layered texture, and expressive movement. Working within contemporary abstraction, each painting becomes a psychological narrative—revealing what cannot be spoken and inviting an emotional, intuitive response. My process is instinct-driven, building layers through movement and mark-making, allowing each piece to evolve organically before refining the composition through a foundation rooted in my BFA training. While grounded in personal experience, my work aims to feel universal—creating space for connection, reflection, and a sense of being fully seen.
